Basic Research
BRINM helps Primary Investigators apply for NIH or DoD grants that will improve the lives of veterans. If these applications are funded, the grant is administered by BRINM, which means that all financial transactions and contract management go through BRINM.
External organizations holding primary awards from NIH or DoD, may give subawards to investigators at the Albuquerque VA. BRINM administers these awards, as well.
A non-profit organization or a donor can award funds to an investigator, who would channel them through BRINM.
All awards involving human research must clear the Internal Review Board as well as the Research and Development Committee. Depending on the nature of the project, there may be other approvals necessary, such as for animal research or use of recombinant DNA techniques.
The grant application process and subsequent approvals is a long and arduous one for even the most gifted researchers.
